Assignment 2
Design Principles

- This assignment is designed as a continuation from Assignment 1 to introduce and identify the design principles of architecture and design in utilizing and creating order in architectural composition and spatial arrangement.

-As a continuation from Assignment 1, where we are introduced to the elements to design, the forms used in this project should be the extraction of the shapes from patterns created in Assignment 1.

-We are then required to produce a series of 8 smaller models of 10cm x 10cm x 10cm each to apply the understanding of design principles.

-Upon completion of the series, we are then required to combine different design principles to produce a 20cm x 20cm x 20cm HYBRID FINAL MODEL to explore various volumetric forms and spaces.

-The 8 design principles given are Balance, Rhythm, Emphasis, Movement, Variety, Contrast, Harmony, and Unity.

Materiality:

-Use only materials from the given list for model making – satay/bamboo sticks, balsa wood, grey             model board, white modeling board, brown modeling board, black cardboard, foam board,                         polystyrene board, acrylic boards, clear plastic sheets.

Objectives of the Assignment:

The objectives of this project:

• To identify basic design principles.

• To apply the understanding of basic design principles.

• To transform 2-dimensional form to 3-dimensional form via model making.

• To manipulate forms through the exploration of design principles in architecture and spatial design.

Learning Outcomes of the Assignment:

On successful completion of this assignment, students will be able to demonstrate the following:

• Recognize and identify basic design elements and design principles.

• Apply and manipulate the elements and principles of design through form-making and exploration.

• Organize space to demonstrate competency in spatial design skills.

• Demonstrate visual and volumetric thinking through the production of spatial design ideas.

1. Lifelong Learning

The assignment helps me to improve more in locate, extract, synthesize, and utilize information effectively. At the end of the assignment, I learned to recognize and identify some of the basic design elements and design principles. I learned how to transform 2-dimensional form to 3-dimensional form via model making.

2. Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills

I learned to think creatively and critically and managed to define and analyze problems to arrive at effective solutions. When doing the assignment, there are some design principles that I do not quite understand about it. This makes me have to stop my process and continue to do research for it. Hopefully, I solved the problem by getting information through the internet and asked my friends for some ideas and information about the design principles and models.

3. Intrapersonal Skills

Before the submission deadline, I will keep looking back for my works and sketches or models to find out whether I have done some mistakes or not. This helps me to improve my models and get better before I submit the assignment. It helps me to make sure the things I have to submit are done perfectly. I have learned to manage myself, be self-reliant, and reflect on one's actions, and learning from them.
