Heritage Conservation - Theories, Principles and Practices

This module is intended to give students a practical understanding of the key principles, theories and methods of documentation of heritage conservation to enable us to understand the importance of preserving cultural and architectural heritage.

-Project 1-

Case Study Analysis and Awareness Slide Report Presentation

As a group of six, we must conduct research, analyse a number of structures, and present each building's approach to conservation for this project. We must each discuss and come to a conclusion regarding the value, awareness, and enjoyment of architectural legacy using one of John Ruskin's Seven Lamps of Architecture.

Self Reflection

In this project, I have learned and understand the basic principles and concepts of heritage conservation and documentation and the management processes. I am grateful to work with Nicholas, Jason, Delilah, Mildred, and Lee Huan. In the individual project, I could comprehend the seven architectural lamps and put them to use in my case study on the value of preserving architectural history by reading about it.

-Project 2-

Heritage and Conservation Proposal Report Presentation

In order to complete this project, we must suggest adaptive reuse for an abandoned chalet at Sungai Buloh Leprosarium. We are required to do site visits, write dilapidation reports, and assess structural flaws. Referring to JWN and ICOMOS norms is required in the proposal. The result is a report presentation that contains an introduction, goals, background information about the location, architectural renderings, surveys, and the proposal.

Self Reflection

I have gained more knowledge and a deeper understanding of heritage conservation through this project 2. I also have a good understanding of the historical conservation process, from the initial step of visiting the place to be preserved through the part including the dilapidation survey and the suggestion of a conservation plan. I applied the information I learned in this module to my proposal. I think it is crucial to conserve the chalets at Sungai Buloh Leprosarium as they have historical, artistic, and social importance. Although the project is challenging, I hope it confronts the legacy of the leprosarium and raises public awareness of leprosy and the leprosarium.
