Building Construction and Materials

The goal of this module was to present the fundamentals of building design and the construction materials utilised for small to medium-sized structures. It focuses on helping students get an understanding of the fundamentals of building components, such as the substructure and superstructure, as well as typical building materials. In this module, 2 projects were assigned to the student which consists of 1 individual project and 1 group project.

-Assignment 1-

Famous Architect’s Building

In order to complete this project, we must locate a building by a well-known architect and list five architectural building materials and two structural building materials depending on the building we have chosen. We must also research the theories, notions, and characteristics of the chosen building materials in connection to their design and construction. Then, on two A3-sized boards, we must create infographics based on our results.

Self Reflection

I have improved my ability to identify different building materials and classify them as architectural or structural characteristics based on how they are used in the particular structure during this project. I can also use effective communication techniques to show a knowledge of building materials and construction using presentation boards. Despite the fact that the presentation is fairly "wordy," I am happy with the boards' conclusion because it is concise and simple.

-Assignment 2-

Construction Detailing of Building Elements

In this task, groups of students will demonstrate their understanding of the construction detailing of building components using manual drawings and research. In order to better recognise and comprehend the close connection between design and technical knowledge, we are required to investigate, apply, document, and explain the detailing of building elements on superstructures as well as the construction process of a building based on the floor plan chosen. A set of construction drawings, including floor plans, elevations, sections, detailed drawings, and sketches with the appropriate specifications, symbols, and proportions, were produced by us.

Self Reflection

We are required to manually draw the building components and construction details for this task, and I feel like this assignment has taught me a lot about construction detailing. I am able to recognise the fundamental building components used in the construction of buildings, and I can also show that I understand how the sub- and super-structural systems work. We had to complete this project quickly because the studio submission was due the last week of the seminar. However, because my groupmates are so fantastic and diligent, we are still able to finish this homework on time.
