For the last assignment of our module, We worked in groups of 4. There were two parts in this assignment. We were asked to do a case study on an existing public space based on the list given. We need to study the tangible and intangible components and put the data collected in canva poster. We have to brainstorm ideas and put in the SketchUp file given and make some adjustments. The public space we chose was POP-UP PARK AT VÁROSHÁZA PARK BUDAPEST, HUNGARY.
Popup Park is a sort of urban oasis, colorful, multi-functional and designed for people. In 2017, a Hungarian studio installed a pop-up park in Budapest's Városháza Park, which often sat empty. They designed lounge areas with long wavy benches and shade structures, which support a variety of uses and activities. Since then, the structures have returned each summer to enliven the space.
The aims of this assignment are for us To identify and to describe the elements or components of the built environment; analyze and evaluate the different development of the built environment by looking at the natural topography, landscape, space, building, and infrastructure.
Weekly Progress
WEEK 1: As a group leader, I opened a Whatsapp group for my team and we started to discuss which public space we wanted to choose for our assignment. There was a website given ( CLICK ME ) for us to choose the public space. In the end, the public space we chose was POP-UP PARK AT VÁROSHÁZA PARK BUDAPEST, HUNGARY. After that, I then distributed the task to my group members and we started to do our own research or task. We put all of our research into a canva page so that we can keep track of our own progress.
WEEK 2: For this week, my group will focus more on part A (case study on an existing public space). Some of us are doing the layout and arrangement of the poster while some are doing the research and put into an A2 size poster in canva. As there is too little information about the pop-up park, we decided to use google earth to study the area around the pop-up park. We tried our best to complete part A so that we can proceed to part B as soon as possible.
WEEK 3: As we all think that the present layout was not so nice so I re-summarize and rearrange our poster layout and also make the corrections stated out by our lecturer. After that, we started to do part B (the Sketchup file).
Since only one person can edit the Sketchup file at the moment, we decided to discuss it by zoom meeting. Yan Jun is the one who edits the Sketchup file and she will share her screen with us and the rest of us will give our opinion and suggestion in the meeting. We added some things like building components or softscapes into our Sketchup file.
WEEK 4: We continued to put all of our effort in our part B as it was a challenging part for us as the things in it were hard to control, it was new to us too. After we think that our part B was done, we just realized that our Sketchup was lacking many things when compared to other groups' work. We then decided to redo our Sketchup file although it was hard and challenging for us. On the grounds that Yan Jun's laptop was lagging, I have no choice but to download the Sketchup app and redo it myself. Hopefully, I managed to redo the Sketchup file in one night and I am satisfied with the outcome.
WEEK 5: After I have done the Sketchup file, we faced a problem again. That is we don't know how to edit the Sketchup file to become a video like an animation. I search for ways on the internet and my group members were also asking their friends so that we can solve this problem as soon as possible since we are lacking time. After a while, we find a way to solve the problem. I used Enscape as my rendering software to get an animation view for our Sketchup. I am the one who edits the animated video as the completed Sketchup file was on my laptop. I sent the video for Yan Jun to add a soundtrack to it. After the video has done, we inserted all the components, concept statement, safety measurements, and visual of intervention into our canva.
Lastly, I am so happy that we managed to submit our assignment right on time! I am satisfied with our work and outcome even though the process was very rush and having some problems.
Outcome
We faced many problems when doing this assignment but luckily we found some ways to solve all the problems. Sometimes, as a leader of the team, I am scared and worried that we might not be able to submit our assignment right on time. Thankfully, I have helpful teammates assisting me and this makes us complete our assignment perfectly and submit it before the deadline. Here're our finalised Sketchup file and our canva site.
Reflection
1. Lifelong Learning
In this assignment, I volunteer to redo the Sketchup file as I think it is hard and challenging, also for reason that my teammates' laptops were lagging and we still need to change some mistakes. Even though I didn't know anything about Sketchup, but if there are opportunities for me to learn new things, I will never let go easily. As luck would have it, I get to know the basic skills of Sketchup and learned to use Enscape as my rendering software to get an animation view for our Sketchup.
2. Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills
I faced many problems in doing this assignment. For example, there is too little information about our chosen public space, none of us know how to use Sketchup and edit video, Sketchup files was lagging, and the other problems. We never stop finding ways to solve our problems. From this, I have learned to think critically and creatively and learned to define and analyze problems to arrive at effective solutions.
3. Communication Skills
This is an opportunity to improve my communication skills as a leader. Normally we used Whatsapp group or zoom meeting to call and discuss the assignment. My group members are active to give out their opinion and this helps us to have more ideas to have a greater outcome. When we are facing a problem, we will have a group discussion or group calls in our Whatsapp group or zoom to come out with a solution. This not only improves our communication skills but also strengthens our friendship.
